The Chancery

The Embassy Chancery is located at Calle Eresma 2 corner  Calle Guadalquivir in El Viso, a prime residential district of Madrid.  The 1, 200 square meter  property was acquired by the Philippine Government in 1997.  A fifty-year old two-story manor house used to sit on the property until it was demolished to make way for the construction of the new chancery and the ambassador’s official residence.  The Embassy started its operations in its present site in November 1998.

The Chancery has two access gates – the Eresma gate leading to the first floor offices and the Guadalquivir gate leading to the Consular Office.

The foyer is dominated by a long, elegant stairway that is the central focus of the entrance.  On the stairway hangs a life-size painting of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero.  On the wall on the right of the staircase also hangs the renowned allegorical painting by the Filipino painter Juan Luna, “Madre España guiando a Filipinas.” (Mother Spain guiding the Philippines).

The well-furnished receiving room also has a wide range of  reference  books on the Philippines that complement the Embassy library at the basement. A carpet made by the Real Academia de Tapices covers the floor in tones of yellow and blue.  On the walls are framed photographs of past and present Ambassadors to Spain.

The access to the Consular Office is at the Guadalquivir gate.  A fine bust of Jose Rizal is situated before the entrance. The reception area is quite spacious with comfortable benches and a 42” flat-screen TV. Applicants for consular services can watch  Philippine news and shows while they wait.
